Sunday DIY: Himalayan Salt Scrub

him-salt-four-ways

Sundays are for quick and easy DIY projects, lounging around, reading , eating and drinking. That is all. Depending on which side of the bed I wake up from, my Sunday can be super relaxed (I don’t move from my bed and watch series) or I go into domestic goddess mode. I cook things from scratch while I indulge in an easy DIY project.

Today was one of those days. I was spurred on when I noticed a lot of himalayan sea salt in my house. It reminded me of a spa day I had once received from a beauty parlour that had included a brown sugar and sea salt face scrub. Being lazy to leave the house and also remembering the expense of that scrub, I decided I could make my own face scrub.

By accident I poured more coconut oil in the salt than I needed to, so I needed to put in more salt to soak up the oil. I ended up with a larger portion of my sea salt scrub base than I intended and I immediately thought of other uses for the excess scrub.

Voila! I had enough for my face, lips, hands and feet. Himalayan Sea Salt Scrub – four ways.

So how do you go about making your own? Quite simple and no fuss.

1 cup Himalayan Salt

1/4 cup coconut oil (you can also use almond or olive oil and add more oil as you like)

2 – 3 drops essential oil of choice  (I always use tea tree oil but there are so many options depending on your preference and use)

Method

  1. Mix coconut oil and essential oil together. Mix well.
  2. Add to Himalayan salt until it has absorbed all the oil. Again, add more salt if you like your body scrub with a more granular feel.
  3. Store scrub in empty body lotion jars or face cream jars.

There you have it…. a simple and quick DIY spa product that you can make at home in less than 10minutes. What are some of your favourite DIY recipes?

Everybody likes a good team-up, don’t they? Because as corny as it sounds, team work does make the dream work!

With that said, we are proud to announce a team-up between ourselves and public relations specialists, KPR Consulting. Together, our first mission is to co-ordinate and manage the Sweden@Zambia Forum and all things related to it.

What is the Sweden@Zambia Forum you ask? Sweden@Zambia is a three-day event on entrepreneurship running between the 19th and 21st of November 2013.The focus will be on ICT, women entrepreneurship and sustainability. The event’s purpose is to highlight the role of entrepreneurship for development of a country and offer a platform for meetings between various Zambian and Swedish actors, with the aim of leading to concrete benefits to all participants such as new ideas, networks, partnerships for mutual support and mentorship, avenues of financing and other exchanges.

The Swedish Embassy in Lusaka is hosting the event together with the Swedish Institute (SI) and Business Sweden (more team-ups!). Zambian co-hosts are the Zambian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI), Zambian Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA), the Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry (MCTI) and the Ministry of Gender (even more team-ups!). A multitude of Zambian and Swedish partners will contribute to the content and results of the Sweden@Zambia event.

Bravo team is C1rca 1964, bringing on board our social media expertise and internet savvy. KPR Consulting is playing alpha team and they will be media liaisons as well as manning the front lines of this event.

KPR Consulting is a firm that is well vested in public relations and knows the nooks and crannies associated with the industry well. It is small enough to take a passionate, personal interest in your business but experienced enough to devise and run powerful, attention-grabbing campaigns on a national level. Like their Facebook page (here)  and follow them on Twitter (here).

We look forward to working with KPR and all the aforementioned organizations in this colossal collaboration.

The A team | Project Cascade

“I love it when a plan comes together”

No matter how old you are now, if no one has ever introduced the awesomeness that is the A-Team to you; then your life is somewhat lacking ;-).

“The A-Team is an American action-adventure television series, running from 1983 to 1987, about a fictional group of ex–United States Army Special Forces personnel who work as soldiers of fortune, while on the run from the Army after being branded as war criminals for a “crime they didn’t commit”” – WIKIPEDIA

We aren’t going to mention names but some members of the C1rca team may or may not have been introduced to this show by their older siblings and have since had a hard time letting go. What does this have to do with C1rca 1964 besides giving you an insight into some of the team members personal interests? Well… C1rca 1964 is all about collaborating not for our own advancement but for everyone we know in the same industry, in our communities and in our country.

Imagine to our pleasant surprise that within the circles we moved, meeting after meeting we discovered common interests and passions with people from different backgrounds and professions. We all had one goal… Promote Zambia. The why was self evident but the how not so much.

The good news is that we finally figured out the how, it’s just a matter of WHEN!

Without further ado let me introduce you to some of the Project Cascade team members. Who can you spot?

Welcome….. | AfriLabs

afrilabs

A lot of you know that one of the things we love to do is venture into new partnerships that inspires us. Last year we partnered with the amazingly talented and passionate team at BongoHive and from there the only way has been up!

Not many people could see or understood how a tech hub from Zambia and a social media management and content creation company could find similar interests but we did. So here we are again, the year nearly over and we find ourselves with a new client in the same field.

AfriLabs describes itself as “ a network organization for the growing number of Africa based technology and innovation hubs”.

So where does C1rca 1964 come in?  The obvious guess is social media management and content creation…. which is correct BUT what makes this different from our work with BongoHive is that we aren’t just focusing on Zambian content anymore.

African content especially within the tech industry and community is just as important as some of the content we have shared here. Our Director and founder, Mukuka Mayuka shall be working closely with AfriLabs Director, Tayo Akinyemi to connect you, inspire you and engage you with AfriLabs content and the various hubs in their network.

Are you ready to go on this journey with us C1rca family? We sure are…. keep your eyes locked right here and also via AfriLabs social media accounts :

Hello C1rca family!

Don’t you just LOVE the above quote? How many of us tread water (going nowhere slowly) and trying not to drown, instead of throwing caution to the winds and swimming towards our destiny? The last month has seen C1rca go through some changes and although some of the changes have been difficult, we’ve come out on the other side with a positive outlook and ready to take on more challenges and celebrate our wins!

Something new

When C1rca was first founded by Mukuka Mayuka  in late 2011; it was a humble blog (still is) with dreams of being a blog that Zambians would come to, to discover what the latest Zambian content was. From online to offline, we wanted to showcase what we felt wasn’t being showcased anywhere else. C1rca 1964 was lucky to have Mazuba Kapambwe (former community manager of Heritage1960) join this growing brand.

Mazuba managed to create dynamic content and made C1rca 1964 brainstorming sessions a fun and creative experience. For 10 months she has contributed to the growth of the C1rc a1964 brand from blog to social media management company. Unfortunately Mazuba is no longer part of C1rca 1964 and her presence shall be sorely missed. However we wish her all the best in her new endeavours and we urge you to continue to support her as she travels around Africa attending some of the continents best festivals via The Fest Guru’s , builds her brand Afrosocialite  and continues her role as Communications Director with Barefeet Theatre.

Last but not least, C1rca 1964 will no longer be hosting the #ZedCreative brunches but never fear Mazuba shall continue the brunches and we shall still be attending them!

Something Old

With all these changes, you might be wondering what is still the same? We are still social media management consultants. Our founder and director, Mukuka Mayuka is still leading us into uncharted and exciting waters. You will still see us “facebooking” here and tweeting here.

#TourismTuesdays| UNWTO Mixtape

Print

You may recognize Duncan Sodala from his work managing Zambian Hip Hop group Zone Fam, or from his work as an artist under his aka ‘The Holstar’. In honor of the UNWTO, Duncan has released a project called ‘The UNWTO mixtape’. He says,

“Slam Dunk Records TV and Da Grapevine TV saw it fit to share with the rest of the world our culture through music, tackling various topics and vices in both societies. This Mixtape is the first of its kind and will serve as an outlet for Zambian and Zimbabwean youth to voice their opinions and stories of today’s happenings”.

Listen to the UNWTO Mixtape here.

We chatted to Duncan to find out more about his project.

C1rca 1964: When did you have the idea for the UNWTO Mixtape?

Duncan: I had this idea late 2012 when I first heard about the UNWTO Conference. I already had a rapport with Naboth of DGVTV Zimbabwe so he was the first person I thought of.

C1rca 1964: Seeing as the UNWTO is about tourism, how do you think the music aspect with the mixtape fits in?

Duncan: Music is the best way to communicate ones cultural to people from elsewhere, its a universal language thats speaks to your soul. This will be able to show how diverse we are as a people and also how close and united we are as Zambia and Zimbabwe.

C1rca 1964: Will you be doing an actual launch event in Livingstone?

Duncan: We won’t have an actual launch, The Mixtape itself will be downloadable online but we are planning on pressing a number of cd’s to distribute to delegates during the conference.

C1rca 1964: Duncan: What was the process of picking artists?

Duncan: We had a call for submissions a few months back, people had to submit songs that they felt related to the country or continent also something inspiring. The deadline for submission was 30th June 2013. We have a final selection of 16 songs.

C1rca 1964: Who are some of the artists that featured?

Duncan: We have Tasila Mwale, Trae Yung, Mac, Princess Jazz and Zone Fam just to name a few.

C1rca 1964: What do you think Zambian artists can learn from Zimbabwean artists and vice versa?

Duncan: We can learn alot from each other…I think Zambian artists can learn from Zimbabwe’s Live music culture it is quite rich and matured. Zimbabwean’s can learn a bit from Zambia’s drive and determination. We can combine and be a major force on the continent.

C1rca 1964: Beyond the mixtape, how do you envision the future of Zim/Zam collaboration?

Duncan: I see a lot for the future, I would like to see more Zambian’s performing in Zimbabwe and vice versa. We need more cultural exchange programs and share knowledge through different forums.

What do you think about the mixtape and what are your favorite tracks? Let us know in the comment section?

#FoodieFridays| The Lusaka Food Festival

lusaka food festival

If there’s one thing we love other than hanging with our favorite #zedcreatives, it’s a good meal. So when we found out that there is an upcoming food festival in our city which turned 100 this year, we knew we had to get all the details. Here’s what we’ve found out about The Lusaka Food Festival.

” The LUSAKA FOOD FESTIVAL will showcase a variety of global cuisines but with main focus on our local cuisines. Our aim is to bring together the different cultures within Lusaka and have them cater their food to the community at large. This will be a cooking event, where food will be prepared fresh and in some cases in front of the festival attendants. In this manner, we want the festival attendants to learn more about other cultures through cuisine”

It will be held on August 30 + 31 at Barclays Sports Complex. In the meantime, you may want to perfect the Mopani Worm Salad  we posted on the site , and get your tatse buds working with the Ifyakulya‘ board on our pinterest page.

#Tourism Tuesdays| Interview with Outdoor Instructor Mwaba Mwila

mwaba mwila

A bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office”.

Are you into adventurous sports like white water rafting, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking and more? Ever searched for a place in Zambia where you could do the above activities and not been successful in finding one? If you answered ‘yes’ to these questions, then this article is for you.

In our Tourism Tuesday series, we feature Mwaba who is an Outdoor Instructor at  Ndubaluba Center based at Chengelo International School in Mkushi. We spoke to him about what his exciting and unusual job entails.

As a kid, Mwaba always envied his friends who at a young age always knew the answer to that taunting but inevitable question, “what do you want to be when you grow-up?” “I would look around and see their faces light up as they envisaged their future as a fire-fighter, policeman, doctor or lawyer. The question always seemed to be a mockery to me because I had no idea whatsoever what I wanted to do with my life. This even carried on into my late teens .Now at the age of 24, I reply proudly and tell them that I am an Outdoor Instructor”.

mwaba mwila2

What does your job entail?

Before I attempt to describe what an Instructor is, let me highlight what an instructor isn’t. There are many fields in outdoor education, many of which are erroneously used interchangeably. An Outdoor Education Instructor is not:

1.       A game ranger,

2.       Tour guide, nor a

3.     A P.E teacher

I must say that my job does entails a fusion of many outdoor disciplines which include all the above.  However, in outdoor education, more emphasis is placed on the learning achieved through doing the activity than the activity itself. For example, for a white water rafting company on the Zambezi, a rafting tour would be provided solely for the thrill of the activity, for the enjoyment and for the fun. We how ever go beyond that and explore team dynamics, confidence building and personal growth.

In a nut shell, Outdoor education is can be summed up as “the use of the outdoors for educational purposes.  OE often involves small groups actively engaged in adventurous activities for personal growth under the guidance of an instructor or leader” – Neill, 2003

Therefore an outdoor Instructor  is one who is trained/qualified in certain adventurous activities  such as canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing etc (the list is endless) who uses these activities to for the purpose of educating others on trust, personal growth, and leadership.

In addition to my role Instructor role I am a Student Counselor and an Award leader for the International Youth Award.

ndubaluba

 About The Centre

ndubaluba2

Ndubaluba founded by Chengelo School in 1994. It provides an Outdoor Education Curriculum for Chengelo School and a range of courses for other Zambian schools, Organizations and Groups from overseas. Subsidised courses are also offered for less privileged groups. The centre aims to provide quality Christian Adventure Education to impact the Nation of Zambia and beyond. Christian Adventure Education can play a key role in the character development of young people and therefore in the positive future development of the country. http://www.chengelo.sch.zm/ndubaluba.php

Why you are in that field,

ndubaluba3

When I was a student at Chengelo, I jumped at any opportunity to participate in all the activities that Ndubaluba Offered. I was selected as outdoor prefect and participated in the Prestigious Adventure Challenge for Schools (ACS) in South Africa in 2005 and was privileged to be captain of the team in 2006 . I became passionate about working with young people and working in the outdoors, but I had a hard time putting the two together because it’s hard to build a career based on instructing, especially in a country where few people appreciate the role of Outdoor Education in the lives of our youth. After lots of prayer and a short period of volunteering at Ndubaluba it became evident that the Lord wanted me back at Chengelo to work at Ndubaluba to help contribute to the vision of the School and that of the Centre.

Advice for anyone who wants to enter that field?

It’s a tough but enjoyable lifestyle! I once read one of the back another instructor’s shirt that “a bad day on the water is better than a good day in the office” which I believe is true, however there is a big price to pay. Generally speaking, the Outdoor sector doesn’t pay well so if you in it for the money you will be disappointed. Also working days can be long and physically strenuous, and you need to be able to cope and live with and austere living. If you are a person who’s scared to get their hands dirty, or break a nail then instructing may not be your thing. You need to look at it as a way of life and not as a way of making a living. It is more than a job, it is a calling. A calling not to lead, but a calling to serve.

How to Get-instructing?

mwaba mwila3

More and more Universities and Institutions around the world are recognizing Outdoor Education and are offering Education up to Degree level. Pursuing a Degree in Outdoor education or attending trainee programs is the surest way of getting into the sector. Programs as you can imagine there are no Universities in Zambia offering such courses, However Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre is always looking for short term volunteer to help out in the running of the center. This is a rare great opportunity for one to decide if instructing is what they want to peruse as a career!

And what you do in your spare time?

Spare time, what spare time? Lol! Instructing is more than just a Job, it’s a life style. You don’t come to work at nine and knock off at five. Hours are long and strenuous and depending on the weather conditions can be physically and mentally challenging! Camps can take up to a couple of weeks away from home, so much so that nights at home seem like a luxury lol! But when you do what you love for a living who needs spare time? I usually do in my spare time what I do at work, cycling, climbing and kayaking. I am always on the move! Another activity I enjoy doing that’s not on my Job description is watching movies, a good comedy is always therapeutic! Also whenever I have the chance I spend time with family and friends as I don’t have many opportunities to see them.

So there you have it, during the #Insaka on Tourism in Zambia, we mentioned that we’d love to be a part of  driving domestic tourism, so we should continue to take part in the fun activities our country has to offer. We’ll definitely be checking out the Ndubaluba outdoor center soon. Will you?

“It wasn’t the Lion King but she loved the jungle and Africa”

” I  was born during the early 1980′s in Kitwe, a small city in northern Zambia located along the border to the Democratic Republic Congo.  My unique  African family has definitely affected my  understanding and perception on life, music, design, fashion and, of course, art.  Our family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio where I spent the early portions of my life.  Living in the United States proved to be a trying time for my family and myself.  It was during this time the pervading concept of understanding my identity and my place in the world began to assume its place in my thinking”.
